Aesthetic dentistry: the diastema closure

Dr. Peter Chaban

While some patients love their diastema, the gap between two teeth, for some it can be a source of discomfort and self-consciousness. This patient today presented with a 2mm diastema looking to close it, in hopes to achieve more confidence in his smile. Like with all my patients I reviewed all the treatment options available even though this patient came in already knowing what treatment he wanted. I believe every patient should be fully informed of all the available treatment options that way I can become confident that the patient is selecting the best option for their needs. In the case the options were: no treatment, composite resin bonding, veneers, and crowns. The most aesthetic option here was veneers however the patient was looking for something less invasive and “reversible” in case he wasn’t happy with the outcome and wanted to revert back to his ‘original look’.

For me, these cases are ones that I constantly look forward to. It’s an opportunity to showcase the technological advances of composite resin in an incredibly artistic way. In this case I opted for nanohybrid composite resin for superior polishing and designed this case according to The Golden Proportion. The Golden Proportion has been considered perfect, ideal, and desirable, and it has been used for many years by engineers and architects in studying beauty and in designing patterns and proportions. It is a useful tool for the evaluation of symmetry, dominance, and proportion in the diagnosis of tooth arrangement and in the application of aesthetic dental treatment.

With proper shade (colour) selection, aesthetic principals, and patience, this result was able to be achieved. The diastema and black triangle that used to exist has completely closed with natural looking embrasure form and an excellent colour match. Most importantly, the patient was very happy with the result and after 3 years still does not miss the look of their old teeth.

As a dentist, I often find myself at the intersection of art and science, where precision meets creativity. One particularly gratifying aspect of my practice is the restoration of anterior teeth, where every procedure is an opportunity to not only enhance a patient's smile but also to showcase the advancements in dental materials and techniques. Today, I'm excited to share a recent case where I performed an anterior resin restoration, specifically a diastema closure, and highlight the remarkable capabilities of nanohybrid composites in achieving superior aesthetics.
